Do Avenged Sevenfold Have the Right Idea About Fans?
6th September 2013 • No commentsIn the latest Billboard, Avenged Sevenfold frontman Matt Sanders, AKA M. Shadows, said the following about performing on talk shows: “I don’t want the fair-weather fans, the soccer moms who watch ‘Jimmy Kimmel’ to discover us that way,” says Sevenfold lead singer Matt Sanders, who performs as M. Shadows. “I want the people who grew up listening to AC/DC and Slayer, and if we can figure out the right way to have those people see a snippet of what you’d see at a festival or a live show, we’ll do it.”
With the band having gone multi-platinum, clearly they’re doing just fine, but is he just a bit overly arrogant? Most artists, even well established ones, are grateful for all fans and all sales, and don’t wish to cherry pick their fan base.
Without those so-called soccer moms, who I’d like to point out, may very well be Slayer fans, Mr. Shadows would likely be working at a car wash, or a restaurant, or a corporate job of some sort, rather than living out his dreams.
I do understand the crux of his point and that artists want to control the environment in which people are exposed to their music, but I also think this is a classic example of artists getting too successful and forgetting what it’s like to be a fan.
I’m sure at some point Matt Sanders discovered an band he loved because he caught them on Letterman or Saturday Night Live. While artists certainly have the right to accept and decline any television offers they wish, don’t they ultimately run the risk of looking like sell outs when they inevitably do decide to appear on program they deem worthy of them?
