YouTube and the Hot 100~ A Good Idea?
1st March 2013 • 2 commentsBillboard Magazine recently announced that they would be changing the formula by which it determines its Hot 100 list and that the new criteria would include YouTube views.
While I wholeheartedly agree that YouTube plays a huge role in the success of music in today’s world, I can’t help but think this is a really bad idea.
Given how many YouTube views are falsified in some capacity, is it really fair to use this as a criteria to determine that top tracks in the country?
I absolutely understand the need to include YouTube in some fashion; perhaps a separate chart for YouTube videos?
Billboard’s editorial director, Bill Werde, stated that “the notion that a song has to sell in order to be a hit feels a little two or three years ago to me,” “The music business today — much to its credit — has started to learn that there are lots of different ways a song can be a hit, and lots of different ways that the business can benefit from it being a hit.”
While I don’t dispute that any of that is true, I don’t necessarily know that allowing a cat meowing Christmas carols, Numa Numa, Gangnam Style, The Harlem Shake, or ‘insert viral video du jour here’ should be competing on the same playing field as songs with radio airplay and digital sales which have been recorded by actual musicians attempting to make a living.
I’d love to hear what all of you think…don’t be afraid to comment (not that I don’t love the emails, too! 🙂
