The Stone Roses Release "All For One", Teach Brilliant Lesson on Promotion in Modern Music Industry

The Stone Roses are one of the bands everyone is always speculating about: Are they reuniting? Are they making a new album? Are they touring? Now, everyone’s favorite Manchester legends have just announced their first new song since the 90s and, in keeping on-trend with the music business of the new millennium, they’re teasing it in a most intriguing way. The Roses are a band that has always played by their own rules and (seemingly) loves to keep fans guessing and their newest promotion has been no exception. Twitter user Ashley Molyneux (@ashymol) shared a photo of one of the many mysterious lemon adverts which popped up around Manchester.

Others have shared similar photos, none of which feature anything but the band’s signature citrus. (The NME has a couple of great pieces on this HERE and HERE.)
In this era of surprise releases, streaming, multimedia, and multi-social media album launches, creatively promotion is half the battle. When the Roses were at the height of their popularity promoting a record was easy, though it probably didn’t feel like it. The formula was simple, MTV was huge, magazines were still widely read, and people bought music. Now things have been upended and it’s difficult for artists to stand out. When you’re speaking about a band with a legacy to protect, they run the risk of sullying their reputation in addition to releasing a go-nowhere album.
That hasn’t happened with The Stone Roses, however. Their lemon slices got the internet buzzing. They got the press talking, writing, and publishing. They got fans excited to see photos of lemon slices scattered about Great Britain, and they got them equally excited to share said photos across various social media platforms. This is how you promote in the new music industry and the Roses have done it beautifully.
Check out “All For One” and let us know what you think!
