The Importance of Unique & Professional Band Photos

26th May 2014 • No comments

Something that has come up time and time again on the #ggchat (the only music industry twitter chat: Every Thursday at 3 & 9 pm ET) is the importance of band photos that are not only professional, but that also deviate from the ‘band with instruments on stage‘ and ‘close up of band member’s faces‘ we’ve all seen ad nauseam.
While it’s true that there are many things artists can do themselves, band members taking ‘official’ band photos with their iPhones and $99 digital cameras does not exactly scream professionalism. If you want to convey to your fans and the music industry at large that you’re serious about your career, don’t make budget cuts with your photos. Even one professional photo shoot can make a world of difference.

Here are a few photos of Noughts and Exes -It’s definitely easier to get creative when the band members are fun and willing to get creative and have fun to get a shot that will make them stand out.

While professional photos can get a bit costly, there are ways to look for discounted rates or even barter services. If your budget doesn’t allow the full cost of a photo shoot or the price of the package you’re interested in, get creative! Don’t expect something for nothing as that’s extremely disrespectful but perhaps a photographer might be willing to trade talent for talent. Maybe the photographer has an event that needs a band; you might consider lowering your rate if they lower theirs? Or perhaps an even trade if it’s equitable?
If you’re a newer artist and need quality photos for your first web site but aren’t quite shooting album covers yet, look around your area for photography students. Photography students have the talent and knowledge and are often looking for experience and subjects to shoot but a lot of people who are paying for photography don’t want to give them a chance. Look around local art schools and photography studios for students who are looking for practice; you may be perfect for one another!

Regardless of what stage your career is in, it’s imperative to have some type of high quality photos representing you and your image. The better the presentation the more likely people are to take you seriously.
