Vassy is one of those artists you don’t realize you know until you start doing a bit of researching into her career. She has had music featured in ad campaigns for some of the biggest companies in the world! Target, Chevrolet, Google, Nike, Sketchers, ESPN, VIctoria’s Secret, Virgin Mobile, Kohl’s, and Yoplait have all used Vassy songs to showcase their brands. Her music has also been in numerous films and television series, including Ugly Betty, Grey’s Anatomy, The Hills, Cabin in the Woods, Bad Girls Club, Love Games, Drop Dead Diva and Last Holiday, to name but a few. Additionally, one of her songs was featured in the trailer for Disney’s global blockbuster Frozen.
Vassy’s music is fun, upbeat, and undeniably sassy; much like the woman herself. The daughter of Greek immigrants, Vassy grew up in Australia and later relocated to Los Angeles. Elements from different cultures and continents add depth and personality making hers far more interesting than most dance music.
Recently, her latest single Mad reached #4 on the Billboard Dance Chart and Vassy took a few minutes out of her schedule to chat with us!

Thirty Roses~ Let me start by congratulating you on your single, ‘Mad’ reaching #4 on the Billboard Dance Club Chart just a couple of weeks ago!

Vassy~ Thank you 🙂

Thirty Roses~ When 2013’s ‘We Are Young’ reached number one on the Billboard Club Chart, you became the first Australian artist to reach number one on the Billboard Club Chart with a debut single. Did that put additional pressure on you or were you able to just enjoy your success as it came?

Vassy~ Yes and no, I thought to myself “WOW, in all the years of music history, I got this title”?! That was followed by “Oh geez my next single better go #1 too, now”! LOL

TR~ How did getting being told you couldn’t sing getting kicked out your school choir as a child affect your drive to become a professional singer? Have you seen the person/people who said that to you since attaining your success? If yes, how did it go? Would you say anything to them if you were to see them now?

Vassy~ I was devastated and hurt but it was the thing that gave me courage and ammunition to succeed and beat the odds. Many years later when my song went #1 on Australian radio, they sent an apology.
Most people probably know almost all of your songs, whether they realize it or not; they’re absolutely everywhere! Your music has been in commercials and campaigns for the biggest companies, television shows, and film studios in the world. Are people often surprised at how much of your music they know?
Yes, people often react with “Oh wow, that’s you”? They recognize the songs in the campaigns and movie trailers. It’s cool I get a lot of emails from fans.

TR~ Having already worked with some of the most respected people in the music industry, including David Guetta, Charlie Midnight (James Brown, Christina Aguilera), Richard Vission (Lady Gaga, Madonna), and Tim Myers (One Republic), are there any names on your ‘wish list’ you’d care to share with us? Any performers you’d like to duet with or producers you’d like to work with in the future?

Vassy~ Bono from U2 and Calvin Harris – among a few.

TR~ I’ll be the first to admit I was a bit shocked at how much of your music I knew, and from so many places, especially since your so often classified as a dance artist. Your music also seems to have a lot of pop and even R & B sensibilities. Do you draw inspiration from particular artists, places, or moods?

Vassy~ Billie Holiday is my main inspiration.

TR~ You’re great about interacting with your fans on Twitter and Facebook. Now that artists are more connected than ever to their fans it also puts added pressure on many to stay on top of all the messages they receive. Do you find it helpful to have a “strategy’ or scheduled time to reply to emails, tweets, and Facebook messages or is it easier to reply to things when you have a spare moment?

Vassy~ I try to get to it when I have time – when I can it’s essential I spend quality time connecting with my fans on a daily basis.

TR~ You seem to be very active in your community. Between your activity volunteering and teaching music to teen girls in your area, hosting charity events, and your involvement with various NOH8 and anti-bullying campaigns, how do balance all of your commitments and have a successful music career? It seems as though each member of society has a bit of a social obligation to help others in some way, do you feel those with public platforms do even more so?

Vassy~ Yes, personally it’s something i like to do and have been doing from the age of 15. I ran hip-hop workshops in Australia and music workshops at detention centers. Now in L.A. I volunteer at a safe house for teenage girls – to empower them and inspire them. I feel it’s crucial to be a role model and to invest my time in helping the youth and minority groups. My fans listen to me and follow me so it’s my duty to convey a positive message and increase awareness and support in the community. I am the ambassador and support many non-profits and charity groups.

TR~ 2014 began with a chart topping single; what does the rest of the year hold for you?

Vassy~ Busy times ahead. I have a David Guetta record coming out, collaborations with Bob Sinclair, Afrojack, Crystal Waters and more!
