‘I Have Watched You Fly’

Several years ago, I was went to see Def Leppard and Billy Squire when they a double headlining tour. Not being a particularly big fan of either act, I went more to be with the group of people going. This has little to do with anything, apart from the fact that Billy Squire was there, obviously. Until that day, I only knew the few songs that were on MTV when I was a tot and had all but forgotten them.

On this particular day, Billy Squire started talking about how Freddie Mercury had been one of his dearest friends. That struck me as odd, but not having known either man, personally, I don’t really know why it would. At any rate, he went on to tell stories of their friendship and recall memories of Freddie Mercury, speaking of him in a way I had never heard anyone speak of him before. He made him sound like a person, rather than a legend. I can’t speak for anyone else in attendance that day, but I was crying my eyes out.

A couple of years this song popped into my head after experiencing my own loss. I couldn’t remember the name, nor could I recall any lyrics. I just remembered something about flying. I went on a mad Google search and finally tracked it down. It was exactly what a needed and became the perfect tribute for my situation.
