You Need Amazon's 'Gortimer Gibbon's' Playlist in Your Life15th July 2016 • No comments
Amazon has recently added a playlist to their SoundCloud and you must stop what you’re doing and listen to it. The playlist features cover versions of tracks from Amazon original series Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street. I must admit, when I first glanced at this I scoffed. These are among the most beloved songs in the history of popular music. Even Flaming Lips’ track “Do You Realize”, a far more contemporary offering than the others, has a timeless perfection about it putting it in firmly in “don’t bother covering this song because you won’t do it justice!” territory. Because I adore the music of each artist featured I reluctantly gave the playlist a listen and was awe-struck by its beauty. Each song maintains similarities with its original version, but it’s obvious each of these artists treated this music with the respect it deserves.
Andrew Bird, Sharon van Etten, Conor Oberst, and The Avett Brothers each highlight their musicianship and vocal talent in a way that reimagines songs we all know by heart and makes them feel new. That said, none of the artists stray from the original intent and feel of the songs and the original purity remains on each track.
It’s truly exquisite and a tranquil mix to start off a weekend. Let us know what you think of it!
